Congratulations to the 2022 PAL Scholarship Recipients,
Xela Davis and Laniya Stevens
Each year, St. Louis PAL awards two $1,000 college scholarships to high school Seniors that have been active in the PAL program. Scholarship candidates must be: a good teammate, a student in good standing, possess high character, and be a good citizen.
Xela has been a member of Police Athletic League for 6 years playing with the Lady Enforcers basketball program since her sixth-grade year. Laniya has been a member of the St. Louis PAL Jaguars Track Club since 2010. She will be graduating from McCluer North High School in May. She is preparing herself to continue her education past high school, noted by the AP and Honors courses she has been taking while attending high school. During her time at McCluer North High School, Laniya has participated on the Junior and Senior Committees, Student Council and Principal’s Student Advisory Council. Jumpshots Over Gunshots
On Saturday, December 14th, PAL partnered with CareSTL Foundation, and SLMPD, for the first annual Jumpshots Over Gunshots event. Over 500 guests attended, and the purpose of this event was to bring awareness to the senseless gun violence in the St. Louis community. The vendors in attendance provided resources on: gun safety, grief counseling, health insurance, smoke detector and child safety, and banking. Toni Cousins, Executive Director of CareSTL, said “one mother stated she didn’t know what to expect, but to see how this event defined the importance of gun violence and safety was refreshing and it gave people an opportunity to feel safe and enjoy themselves.” To cap off the event, guests enjoyed watching two basketball games between Politicians vs. Media, and Police Officers vs. Firefighters. They were also entertained at half-time by the Carr Lane Spirit Squad. In the end, bragging rights went to the Media and Police Officers. We would like to thank Toni Cousins at CareSTL, and Regiana Moore and Mike Shaw at SLMPD for putting on such a wonderful event, and to all who came out and showed their support for our players and the community.
